Introducing the SCR1

About the SCR1

The Scalar Performance SCR1 is the first all-electric amateur touring race car. With a bespoke powertrain designed for the rigors of racing, it is the first club racing electric vehicle approved by the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) for touring car road racing.

The SCR1 has been engineered to provide its driver with the same feeling of a mid-engine gas powered race car, while adding new technologies and the exhilarating torque of an electric powered car for an overall improved racing experience. Applying a user-centered design (UCD) process, the SCR1 was built to provide drivers with the best all-electric amateur sport club race car.

Modernizing club sport amateur racing by providing race car owners with new technologies was the driving force behind the engineering of the Scalar Performance SCR1. Technologies such as continuous real time telemetry, high resolution GPS, powertrain metrics and driver behavior data used by professional racing teams are available on the SCR1.

The maintenance of the SCR1 is very minimal, allowing drivers to spend their race weekends racing. Another driver-centered way of improving racing experience for race car owner.

Safety remains the priority in the continuous development of this race car. Our mantra is protect the driver, protect the track, protect the car. A large number of safety systems have been put in place inside the SCR1 that meets and exceeds all FIA safety requirements for electric vehicles, making it a very safe race car to drive and own.

What makes the SCR1 safer?

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”- Benjamin Franklin

SAVE THE DRIVER. SAVE THE TRACK. SAVE THE CAR

Save the driver, save the track, save the car is Scalar Performance safety guiding principles. Safety remains a top priority in the development of the SCR1 car, therefore this electric race car meets and exceeds FIA safety requirements for electrically powered vehicles.

What makes the Scalar SCR1 different from other electric race cars, is the fact that this car has been completely purpose engineered and built for motor racing and not adapted from any existing electric street vehicle. From powertrain and gearbox to the highest standards safety features, no adaptation or compromise has been made. As a matter of fact, many industry firsts have been developed and incorporated into the SCR1.

The Scalar SCR1 is designed and engineered exclusively for motorsport exceeding all safety standards associated with auto racing, making sure the drivers are safe, the track marshals are safe, and the car is safe.

Electric Vehicle Safety Hazards

All electric vehicles come with safety hazards specific to battery operated vehicles which are different from a internal combustion vehicles.

Electric vehicles come with two unique safety concerns.

  1. Thermal runaway: Thermal runaway is a phenomenon in which the lithium-ion cell enters in an uncontrollable self-heating state which can ultimately result in fire.

  2. Electric Shock: High voltage systems can be lethal. Unlike 12V systems found in traditional cars, electric vehicles carry both high DC current from the battery and high AC current to the motor.

Continue reading for how the SCR1 addresses these safety concerns!

Thermal Runaway Prevention

The Scalar SCR1 is equipped with safety control electronics to prevent thermal runaway with a battery management system to limit discharge rates and heat and early detection technology. With substantially more thermistors throughout the pack than any road going car, early detection and mitigation is key to safety.

Thermal management is provided on the Scalar SCR1 by chilled water plumbed through the battery and inverter.

If a thermal runaway event was to occur (perhaps do to a battery pack intrusion due to a crash), the SCR1 battery is packed full of HB Fuller fire retarded urethane. This prevents the thermal runaway of a single battery cell from propagating to adjacent cells.

The Scalar SCR1 battery box has aluminum construction with a bottom 1/4” protection plate to limit intrusion and dissipates heat more effectively.

Fire Suppression System

The fire risk from electric race car is considerably less than any conventional petrol operated vehicle since electric vehicles have no combustion, no ignition source, no hot exhaust, no fuel cell or gas tank, and the oil and coolant never exceeds 176F (80C). However, even though minimal, the risk of fire remains from oil, combustible materials and battery thermal runaway.

In case of fire, the Scalar Performance Engineering Team have worked closely with Lifeline to develop an industry first fire suppression system integrated through the battery pack using Novec 1230 chemicals to flood the battery module for faster and safer response.

Electrical Shock Prevention

Electrical shock is a safety hazard associated with the use of any electric vehicle. To prevent any electrical hazard, the Scalar SCR1 is equipped with an external electrical emergency kill switch, within driver reach and surrounded by plastic for increased safety. Within an arm length, the driver can quickly kill the 12V electrical system as well as the 800V electrical system.

Prevention is also keeping the driver and even track marshals aware of hazards.

The driver has a visual representation of power in the vehicle keeping the driver informed of any electrical failure such as an isolation fault detection light. A high voltage safety light also warns the track marshals from electrical hazards when approaching and neutralizing the car.

The Scalar SCR1 is also equipped with a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) logic for emergency shutdown as well as Pyro fuses ensuring safe, instantaneous shutdown of high-voltage electric currents in case of a crash.
